HKB (HeeresKüstenBatterie) 4/974 is situated just outside one of the worlds largest Maelstroms , The Saltstraumen. The fortification is built over two hills, with fake positions on a third hill, and was operational in june 1943 but completed in 1944.

This first hill I visited was named Batterie Straumöy-Süd (south) and was armed with three 21 cm cannons with a range of 16000 meters. Here were also four 50mm mortars, one 5cm KwK gun, two 20mm Flak, two Mg positions and two searchlights, a 60 cm and a 150 cm.

The positions are very well hidden in the terrain and is built of natural stones and concrete. In addition to the fighting positions there are bunkers and living quarters for the crews and a large underground complex with several rooms and halls. In one room there are two large water tanks and in another room a large oven. This is a very well preserved fortification and I can`t wait to check out the other hill. Hopefully before the snow comes.
